EDWARD REEP (1918-) noted California artist modernist figural painting study of a woman
This is an eye-catching work in what appears to be a mixture of perhaps thinned oil and gouache, the work itself 22 1/2" by 13 1/2", in a narrow modern green plastic frame that contrasts dramatically with the bright orange of the work itself. Signed boldly at lower right, this painting is on board. The painting was created by living important California painter and watercolorist EDWARD REEP (1918-). The family happened to have seen this online and the artist (now in his 90's) having seen images, has confirmed that it is his work. Reep's work is largely in watercolor but in the course of a long and productive career he worked worked with a variety of materials and in a number of different styles. The noted Santa Barbara gallery Sullivan Goss has written a biography of Reep's long life and there are several biographies on line. New York born, the artist was in Southern California by 1921 and was studying with the likes of Barse Miller, Willard Nash, Emil Bisttram, and Stanley Reckless at the Art Center School in Los Angeles by the year 1936. Several years later he was a member of the California Watercolor Society. World War II saw him in Europe and Africa sketching combat art, which brought him considerable recognition. After the war he taught at Chouinard School and by 1970 was a professor at East Carolina University. In the post war period Reep wrote several books on watercolor, and focused on not just technical aspects of the medium, but on the creative potential for expression. He retired in 1985 and could now be regarded as something of a living legend and repository of California art history. Condition: While in my possession the surface came in contact with some water, and the unfortunate result in the lower quarter of the painting are some vertical drips which though undeniably present are not sufficiently obtrusive so as to affect the overall artistic impact of the painting.
