Lithograph on paper, 29" by 22" (37 1/2" by 30 1/2" as framed and matted), pencil signed at lower right by the artist and inscribed at lower left "For David from Joan/Thank You!!! 10/10/89", and titled in the stone "Joan Brown/The Raccoon/1983 to Present". This is a scarce example of printmaking by this major American contemporary artist, the major works of whom are eagerly sought after by collectors. Paintings have approached six figures at auction in New York. She was not evidently an active printmaker but later in her career she did produce a limited number of whimsical images through an Oakland gallery. I believe the edition was approximately 200 plus artist proofs, of which this appears to be an example. This is a most affordable opportunity to own a work by a major late twentieth century contemporary artist. Joan Brown died tragically in 1990 in India when a portion of a building fell on her while she was directing the installation of one of her sculptural works. Her biography is unusually interesting. The New York Times noted her passing with a detailed obituary at the time. See the net for more information on Brown and her career, and images of her work, which ranged from the abstract to the whimsical, often including animals. Though I have not examined it out of the frame, the print appears to be in superb condition, with white paper, and no foxing nor rippling. The frame is of matte black wood, and all framing appears to have been professional and presumably acid-free. It came from a local estate in Pacific Palisades, and might have possibly been inscribed to the owner of the home. .
