Large oil on canvas, 30" by 40" and 7 1/4" wide wood frame of the period, the subject being fishing boats on the beach, a classic work of the noted and well listed French artist CHARLES LEVIER (1920-2004). The painting is signed at lower right and signed again and titled on the reverse "Barques sur la plage". Levier was a prolific artist and his works are widely distributed around the world, but despite the volume of work, demand for the late artist's paintings remains steady at auctions in Europe and America. His spiky black outlining is reminiscent of the master Bernard Buffet, yet Levier's style is all his own. He painted landscapes, harbors, and still life works, as well as mid 20th century female figures. Though born on the French Mediterranean island of Corsica, late in life he spent time in New York and California. See the net for much more information on this popular contemporary artist. CONDITION: the painting is damaged and will need restoration---see photos and more will be happily supplied upon request. Most notably there is a ragged tear at right center, about 8" across; then, another at left, an irregular puncture about 2" across; and several more light tears in the right hand portion of the picture. All edges match up however so I believe this work should be well within the capabilities of a professional. Shipping wizard figures are just guesstimates; due to the size this might be a candidate for something like Craters and Freighters or Greyhound Package Express, both of which handle large pieces. .
