Texas art vintage still life oil painting likely by FRANK KLEPPER (1890-1952)
This is a very attractive, older oil on canvas, 20" by 24" and 2 3/4" wide vintage frame, unsigned, but bearing on the front a plaque with the name "FRANK E. KLEPPER" and on the reverse is an old small newspaper fragment discussing Klepper. This painting was offered in a Texas art sale by David Dike some years ago, at which time it did not sell. Since the auction, I acquired from Mr. Dike a letter on his stationery, dated December 5, 2002, declaring that in his opinion this is indeed a work of Frank Klepper. The painting is in good condition, with no tears or instability, though a cleaning wouldn't hurt. Klepper was a major figure on the Texas art scene in the first half of the century. He is most associated with the Dallas area where he spent most of his time but he did travel throughout the Southwest and overseas as well. Klepper studied with George Inness and was himself a teacher. He was a member of many regional art groups including the Dallas Art Association. Today, works by Klepper are sought after by Texas collectors. Usually he painted landscapes, but a wide variety of subject matter was addressed, in a number of media including ceramics, prints, and murals. See the net for much more on the artist.
