***ONE OF TWO WORKS BY THIS ARTIST IN MY SHOP (the other from 1952)***This is a good-sized (24" by 36") unframed oil in the primitive or "naive" style, depicting an apparent voodoo ceremony in Haiti, signed at lower center and dated "79" by the nicely listed Haitian artist, LOUIS JOSEPH (1932-2007). Note the dramatic use of color and shape, the artist having filled the canvas and framed the scene with the swirling lines of the trees. Joseph, according to information acquired from the net, was born in Port au Prince in 1932, and just recently passed away, in 2007. He studied at the important Centre d'Art, which served as an incubator of sorts for a number of Haitian artists who went on to become well known. There are a few auction records, but according to the website I referenced, Joseph's works are "rare". This one is in generally very good condition with a little scraped area near the spooky owl at top and a few other very superficial abrasions elsewhere. Shipping wizard figures are guesstimates.
