Oil on canvas, 22" by 18" and 2 1/2" wide frame, unsigned, showing the famous Mountain of the Holy Cross in central Colorado, 100 miles west of Denver and 15 miles from Vail. This is a late 19th century painting, evidently a copy of the iconic 7' by 5' work by famous American artist Thomas Moran, which was completed in the year 1875. The painting is not in good condition, with soiling, paint loss, punctures, and scrapes, but, I believe it worth restoring. See the net for images of the Moran painting. The mountain was symbolic of God's presence in Victorian times; it was visited frequently by the sick, in light of its perceived healing powers, and was photographed by William Henry Jackson and nineteenth century tourists. By 1950 part of the cross disappeared due to rock loss caused by natural erosive processes. See other Colorado art on my site and hundreds of other paintings.
