JAKE LEE (1915-1991) California Scene school watercolor art painting of a fountain
Watercolor on paper, 10 1/8" by 13 1/4" (15" by 18 1/4" as framed), signed at lower left with the distinctive signature of California Scene artist JAKE LEE. This is an image of a white fountain framed by a balustrade and mature trees. Jake Lee's works are increasingly sought after by collectors in the wake of his relatively recent passing. This is a clean example in excellent condition. See the net for more images of his paintings, which include California landscapes, as well as overseas exotic images executed in the course of his travels. Lee was born in Monterey in 1915, and began there painting scenes of the Chinese community of California. Later he studied with Dong Kingman. According to Hughes, Lee's watercolors "are a blending of occidental and oriental techniques". ALL PHOTOS WERE TAKEN THROUGH THE OLD NON-GLARE GLASS, adding a fuzziness to the images that obviously would not be present in the art itself.
