Oil on canvas still life of grapes and peaches in a basket, measuring 16" by 20" (24" by 28" as framed), signed at lower left "L A Briggs". This is a typical New England painting of about the turn of the century, in the style of the Fall River School of Massachusetts. The painting is very dirty and a cleaning would do wonders (see left edge for indication of the degree of smoky dirt, that part having been protected by a former frame). There is a 1 1/2" horizontal tear at center hidden in the composition but it would need to be repaired professionally. The artist is listed but there doesn't seem to be a lot known about him; some paintings of marine subjects like sailing ships have shown up at auction in the East. A prior owner told me that this was originally part of a pair, the other painting showing bananas. Frame was matched to this painting, the original having been discarded, but the dark blackish green works. See hundreds of other works in my shop.
