Dramatic black ink drawing, 21" by 28" (28 3/4" by 35 3/4" as framed), signed at lower right and dated 75, by the late California watercolor master artist MILFORD ZORNES (1908-2008). I actually wasn't aware he had passed on until I just pulled up the askart site for details of his highly distinguished career. Zornes has been a familiar name on the California art scene for so long that it is difficult to believe that he has passed from it. Paintings dating back to the WPA 1930's, in tight, detailed style, contrast with later, looser works of recent years. The artist was Oklahoma born, but spent most of his life in California----that is, when he was not traveling the world, creating works of art in the most exotic of locales. He traveled South America, Mexico and other more distant parts of the world, but always seemed to return to California for inspiration. Taught by Millard Sheets, Zornes developed his own style in watercolor and oil. He was also an illustrator and muralist. This work is typical of his vigorous style, and is complete without the addition of color. Condition is excellent, with the paper white and no foxing or staining. See askart for much more on the long and highly distinguished career of this now sadly departed California master. .
