Ralph Stevenson & Son Millennium Plate
The decorative program of this pattern is more complex than any other piece of transfer ware I've seen. The center is an illustration of Isaiah 11:6, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatted calf together; and a little child shall lead them." It is an image made popular in American art by the Pennsylvania painter, Edward Hicks. Above this central scene is the phrase, "Peace on Earth," below it, "Give us this day our daily bread."
The border on the plate is all fruits and flowers, representing the bounty of the earth. At the center top is the image of a Bible open to the chapter and verse illustrated, and above that, the all-seeing eye of God.
Size: 10.5" in diameter.
Condition: some utensil marks to center, which can only be seen under close inspection. To 0.25" chips to the rim: one is on the back and isn't noticeable. The other is at about the five o'clock position.
Mark: elaborate cartouche on the back with the pattern name, "Millenium" (sic) in it.
