J Furnival & Co. Medina Dark Blue Transferware Platter

A fine, large piece of English Staffordshire transferware, this is an octagonal platter by Jacob Furnival & Co. in the Medina pattern. Furnival was in business from 1845 to 1870. This piece has a nice, dark blue-purple color with really crisp detail, which suggests it's an early piece.

Size: 17.5" long by 13.75" wide by 1.75" tall from table to rim.

Condition: glaze is crazed, some scattered utensil marks to center which can only be seen under close inspection. There are a number of small bubbles in the glaze on the front surface of the piece, but they're not noticeable as they're covered by the transfer printing. A small piece of grog or frit has caused a very small (0.125" diameter) glaze loss in the border, and there's the usual wear to the back of the piece from use.

No chips cracks or other damage. All in all, a very clean, crisp piece, given that it is around 150 years old.

Mark: printed backstamp with pattern name and the initials "J F & Co." in a cartouche.
