An unusual light blue and white Wedgewood sweet dish or pin tray. The dish is decorated with a laurel border and a profile portrait of George Washington.
This piece was made in a limited edition for the National Portrait Gallery in Washington. The image of Washington is based on Houdon's bust, which is in the Gallery's collection (the same bust is also the source of the image on the quarter dollar).
The dish is 4.5" in diameter.
Condition: as new, no wear or damage.
Mark: impressed Wedgwood marks, printed mark reading, "NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION EDITION LIMITED TO 1776 EXAMPLES". Hand-number 1649. Based on the edition size, I suspect these were made in either 1975 or 1976.
