A fine and large Wedgewood Jasper Ware medallion in light blue Jasper. This large oval plaque carries the crest of the University of Pennsylvania in white relief. This crest combines elements from the Penn and Franklin family coats of arms and was adopted by the university in 1933, bear the Latin motto: Leges sine moribus vanae ("laws are meaningless without morals").
The medallion is 4.125" long and 3.125" wide.
It is set in a dark blue leather box with gilt trim, lined in velvet. The cameo is as new, no wear or damage. The leather box has some wear and is lacking the pull-tab to lift the lid.
The box also contains a card listing the recipient as Evelyn Baurse Rosenberg (Penn, 1944). It's #28, of (from what I've seen) perhaps 250.
Mark: impressed sans-serif Wedgwood marks, dating this piece to the early 50s. (Wedgwood was in the midst of moving their factory when WWII began, and production of Jasperware didn't restart until 1952). Also a hand-painted gold mark reading "First edition No 28."
