Wedgwood Crystal Devon Wine Cooler

In 1969, Wedgwood, started experimenting in producing glassware under their own name which had been associated with ceramics for over two centuries. They did so by purchasing the King's Lynn Glass, founded by designer Ronald Stennett-Willson. The glass was marketed as Wedgwood and sometimes marked with a sand-blasted version of the Portland Vase mark. The shapes were modern, occasionally Brutalist, in keeping with the fashions of the times in the UK in the early 1970's, and some items combined Wedgwood Jasperware cameos with hand-blown crystal. Though Wedgwood owned the company until 1992, these original designs were out of production by the end of the 1970's.

This is a Devon wine cooler or ice bucket in crystal.. It was designed by Frank Thrower and is an excellent example of the Brutalist Modern designs the Thrower favored. The bucket is a cylinder of crystal with a vertical optic. It is articulated by a narrow foot and wide, scooped-out mouth. The top edge is ground flat. and suspect this form would have been prone to chips along the edge..

Size: 8.25" tall by 6.75" in diameter at the mouth by 3.75" in diameter at the foot.

Condition: as new, in original box.

Mark: acid-etched "wedgwood" mark on the bottom edge.
