Meissen Round Box with Hand-Painted Nasturtiums
The box is 3.5" in diameter and 2.675" tall.
Condition: very slight wear to the gilt edging, otherwise fine.
Mark: cobalt blue crossed-swords mark (this particular mark was used between 1850 and 1924) with two lines ground through it, indicating that this was a factory "third". Impressed number 437 and 50. Painted mark: h71 927.
Usually, the double-lines through the mark are thought to indicate that a piece was decorated outside the factory, but the painted numbers on the back are of a form used by Meissen. I suspect this piece was rejected as the painted decoration did not meet factory standards in the early 20th century.
