Lamberton China Phillips Exeter Vegetable Bowl

This -rather extraordinary- footed vegetable bowl was made for Phillips Exeter Academy. I would assume that it was made for the students' dining room, as it is good quality institutional china, but particularly not fine. It's vitreous transferware, which was a solid product at the turn of the twentieth century.

On the exterior, the bowl is decorated with a floral band. In the interior, the bowl is decorated with another floral band, punctuated by the Phillips crest and a script letter "A". In the center of the bowl is Exeter seal, an oval containing an image of a beehive, pine and oak trees, and a rising sun bearing the motto "Non Sibi" -'not for you'. The Latin motto, "FINIS ORIGINE PENDENT" -'the end depends upon the beginning' is a firm statement of reality.

The seal on this bowl is the earlier version, before the 1952 redesign, the version of the seal which may has been supplied by Paul Revere.

The bowl is 8.5" in diameter and 3.5" tall.

Condition: Moderate wear to the interior center of the bowl. This is pure wear from use. Otherwise fine.

Mark: "Lamberton China" in script, which dates this piece to before 1924, as that was the year Mr Schemmel took over the works.
