Roseville Mostique Matte Gray Eight Inch Vase
It's an interesting line: the pieces were cast and then covered in gray or tan slip, then details were highlighted in bright-colored glazes. The interiors were also glazed with a strong color, in this case, a dark emerald green.
This vase has decoration consisting of geometric, abstracted spade-shaped flower forms with blue triangles in between.
The vase stands 8" high and is 4.125" at the mouth.
Condition is excellent: the green glaze to the interior is crazed. There is a 0.25" long bubble on the rim, and new to it, a 0.25" spot of adhered clay. There is a fingernail mark in the side of the piece, on one of the stems.
There are losses to the grey slip on the bottom and one (0.5" long) along the bottom edge of the piece, which can only be seen by inverting the vase. Otherwise fine, no chips, cracks or other damage or manufacturing defects.
Marked on the bottom 164, which is the shape number for this vase, which was offered in five sizes. No Roseville backstamp, so this example date sot before 1923.
This is a solid example of this pattern, but not the best I've seen. It addition to the manufacturing defects and the condition of the foot, the mold seam on both sides is pronounced and the glazes on the decorations are a little muted. I have priced this piece accordingly.
