For your viewing is this fine early 1900's example of a hand painted "Lion" Scenic Plaque.
The incredible piece measures a large 15-3/4" wide and has been professionally decorated by the Pickard Artist, D.M. Campana, under his abbreviated name "Camp".
Dominick Campana decorated for the Pickard Studio in Chicago starting in 1902. He held a Fine Arts degree from a school in Venice, Italy. When he emigrated to the States he initially worked for the Ceramic Art Co. in Trenton, NJ. from 1898 to 1901. His animal pieces, mainly Lions and Tigers, are some of the most sought after pieces for Pickard Collectors. He was also accomplished at painting florals and conventionalized designs. In 1903 he opened a studio and art school in the Auditorium Building, located in Chicago's "china painting district". He was well known through the artist community. During this time he taught a summer seminar at the Chicago Art Institute and became a member of the Chicago Ceramic Arts Association. In later years he opened an art supply company writing instruction books on numerous art subjects. A full half page on his background, entitled "Dominick Campana Studio, 1903--1915" can be found in Reed's popular Pickard China Collectors book [Page 254].
This Lion Plaque, which was decorated on a J.P.L. France Limoges blank, was most likely decorated sometime between 1903 and 1915. If you look closely at the attached photos, you will note the fine detail he puts into his subject.....even on a closeup. The proud and regal "Lion" stands imposingly, at the edge of a cliff, viewing the valleys and mountains around him. The soft background colors of lavender, creme yellow, and a sky blue accents the overall beauty of the piece. More oftenly, fine display pieces, such as this, are decorated on plate, charger, or tea trays blanks than on the more desirable Plaque.
The Plaque is in excellent overall condition, nearly pristine. There are no nicks, chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs on this beauty. The paint colors are sharp as though it were painted yesterday. On some of the photos you will see glare at the very bottom rim.
The Plaque has been decorated on a J.P.L. France Limoges blank and marked on the backside [see photo]. Campana has boldly signed the front of the Plaque, at the 5:00 area, under his short signature version, "Camp"
Currently the Plaque resides in a special built oak Charger/Plaque/Tray Holder high on a wall in my office. The Plaque has been exceptionally well cared for over the last 100+ years and close examination leads me to believe that it was handled very infrequently.
This fine and imposing piece draws attention where ever she is displayed and will make a fine addition for the serious Pickard or hand painted collector.
