Outstanding Vintage Limoges HP 1900 "Family Generations" 13-3/8" Plaque by "IDA SOMMER"

This is one of the most outstanding and unusual Limoges Plaques I have ever come across and its has displayed nicely in my home for many years. This vintage, early 1900 piece came out of an Chicago Estate and as such was an early commission professional decorating job done by the Chicago Decorator, "Ida Sommer". Ms. Sommer, who had her own Chicago Decorating Studio from 1915-18, did some outstanding professional decorating and was able to compete with the likes of Pickard, Donath, Brauer, Stouffer, and Osborne. [See Reed's Pickard Collectors Book for information].

This wonderful one of a kind piece details a "Family Generation" and attempts to depict in symbolic terms a brief family history. The focal point of this plaque is the Mother who is shown with 2 of her daughters...one which she is holding. Please note her flowing wind blown hair...and the vibrant auburn color. Look closer and you will see her streaks of grey. Now focus on the children that are not close to her. To the right is a young girl...with symbolic long arms....desperately trying to cling to one of the Mother's grown daughter. I suspect that this child is very sick...or has just passed away. Now look to the left....and note the other grown daughter. She appears to be floating away...going her own way. Possibly she has just passed away....or has moved away and has taken up a new life away from her Mother. Now look at the young girl in the upper left hand corner. She has such a peaceful and angelica look. Sadly she represents a young daughter who has pass and gone to heaven.

Ms Sommer has used a natural flow of gown and people to convey her story and message. Take one more look at the yellow glow behind the Mother and two daughters. I have had numerous pieces decorated by Ms. Sommer over the years.........but none match or rival the story this Plaque tells.

The Plaque itself measures a large 13-3/8" long and almost 11" wide. Ms. Sommer has boldly signed the Plaque at the 4:00 area. The Plaque itself is in good condition and is without nicks, chips, or other damage..and a few minor natural dimples which appear to have been part of the Plaque when originally made.

I forgot to mention the great detail...if you look closely...in the background...including the billowy clouds and flowing motion of people and gowns. This superb piece displays very well and will draw attention with its captivating story.

The Plaque has an early Limoges mark [see photo] "Sevnic Limoges P.P. France".
