Fresh from a private home, I am offering a fabulous example of an early 1900 handpainted matched Floral Tea Set W/Sugar & Trivet.
This brilliantly hand painted 25 Pc. Set was decorated by the Pickard Artist "Edward Mentges". (Please see Reed's Pickard Collectors Book for bio). Mentges is known for his outstanding "Poppy" renderings and worked for Pickard from 1905-1912, then ran his own Chicago Studio from 1914--1920.
This wonderful set has been decorated with large life like "Burnt Orange Poppies" on stem and leaf. Mentges used extensive gold gilding to accent all the pieces giving the entire Set a rich and expensive look. The Set comprises of: a Tea Pot & Lid (9-1/4"), Sugar [3-1/2" tall] & Lid, Trivet [6"], and 10 Cups [2-1/4" tall & 4-1/4" long] & 10 Saucers [5-5/8"].
The Set is in very good condition and is without nicks, chips, or other damage, with one cup having a top rim chip. The gold is excellent throughout with only very little traces of wear.
The Saucers & Tea Pot are marked "MZ Austria" while the Cups and Trivet are unmarked, but most likely MZ Austria or Bavaria. "Mentges" has signed the Tea Pot [see photo] and initialed most of the remaining pieces.
Large Tea Sets by Pickard Artist are a rarity now days and this beautiful Set shows the pride of many years of tender loving care and was most likely a display Set.
