Edward Donath was born in Selb Bavaria in 1871 coming from a family of China Decorators who worked for both Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal. Young Edward was a skilled decorator at an early age and many experts believe he also decorated for these two great Studios before emigrating to the U.S. in 1893. The skills that Donath learned in Germany almost immediately landed him a job with the fledging Chicago Studio, Pickard in 1894. By 1897 Donath started his own Studio in downtown Chicago, while also still working for Pickard. By the time Donath finally ended his tenure at Pickard in 1905, Pickard was well on its way to being the foremost China Decorator in America.
Donath was now a well known and accomplished Artist having entered his fine creations previously into the Central Arts Association Exhibition as well as the Chicago Ceramic Art Association Exhibit at the Chicago Art Institute.
The Edward Donath Studio ran from 1897-1903 & 1905-1928. During this time he employed some of the best artist in Chicago including former Pickard Artist, Adolph Heidrich, Max Rost, LeRoy, George,Stahl, J.Heinz, as well as Carl Koenig. The Studio met with great success and became one of Pickard chief rivals over the next 25 years. Alan Reed in his Pickard Collectors Book devotes eight pages to this great studio and many fine photo examples of its great works.
This is a fine example of a Edward Donath's creation, a superb hand painted floral Plate, decorated on a J.P.L. France Limoges blank, and measuring 9-5/8" wide. The attractive hand painted Plate displays vibrant "Pink Roses" on stem and leaf against a background of shadow leafing and background colors or crème yellow and shades of green. Look closely and you will see added gold gilding on the outer rim as well as raised rose buds. The beautiful artwork, use of colors and presentation are all the earmarks of a master decorator.
The Roses Plate is in very good condition and totally free of nicks, chips, cracks, or other damage.
The gorgeous Roses Plate displays a "J.P.L. France" Limoges mark and has been prominently signed on the front of the Plate, "Donath".
