The Edward W. Donath Studio was one of Chicago's premiere China Decorators during the early 1900's, operating in the Chicago Downtown Loop area. The Studio found great success from the start in 1897 and operated for more than 30 years, except for a brief stint at the Pickard Studios [1903-05], closing their doors in 1928. During this era the Donath Studios had some of the best artist in America and rivaled the other great Chicago studios including Pickard, Brauer, Osborne, and Stouffers. During this time the Donath Studios could boast having employed at least six former Pickard Artist. Alan Reed's Pickard Collectors Book has a 8 page section on this find Studio, including many find photo examples.
This is a fine early example of Donath's work and was most likely decorated by Edward Donath, himself. It is a beautiful 7-1/2" tall & 7-1/2" wide 3-handle Love Cup decorated with raised gold flowers against a matted gold. Nearly 1/2 the Cup from the top rim down shows this beautiful decor....and on all three sides. Note the large oversized handle and the wonderful combination of heavy gold gilding and a fine floral display which appear to be Roses.
The hand painted Love Cup is in excellent condition and totally damage free of chips, cracks, hairlines, or other damage...with minor gold wear.
The Love Cup displays the Donath Mark # 4 which was used starting in 1906, as well as an early "J.P.L. France" mark.
The beautiful heavy gold Love Cup shows and displays exceptionally well.
