June 2, 1937, Stephen Collins Foster Memorial Program...The ground for the Stephen Foster Memorial was broken January 13, 1935, the corner stone was laid June 3, 1935 and the building was formally dedicated June 2, 1937. This 16 page booklet was presented the first year when the memorial was opened and was later issued a second time during the same year.

The Stephen Collins Foster Memorial of the University of Pittsburgh is "A Tribute to the Composer Whose Melodies Have Become the Heart Songs of the American People" was Dedicated June 2, 1937. Two of his melodies include Old Folks at Home and My Old Kentucky Home. Some of his ballads include Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, Beautiful Dreamer, Oh! Susanna, and Camptown Races.

The collection now comprises more than 10,000 separate items including: original manuscripts and letters; first editions, and early and modern editions of Foster's music; personal possessions of the composer; books; magazine and newspaper records; broadsides; and other material. During our countries hard times---WWI, The Great Dust Bowl, and the Great Depression, at the turn of the 20th century, Stephen Foster composed more than two hundred original songs and compositions that lifted the spirits of all American's both young and old.

Going to school in the 1950's, my classmates and I sang quite a few of his songs during the year especially around Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Unfortunately many of todays school children haven't heard of Stephen Foster or sang any of his wonderful songs. How sad is that!.
