1915 Spalding's Official Baseball Guide with Babe Ruth & Jim Thorpe
Offered for sale is this extremely rare piece of vintage baseball memorabilia. Offered is the Spalding's Base Ball Guide dated March, 15, 1915, Group 1, No. 1, published by American Sports Publishing Company, 21 Warren Street, New York City, New York. These small pocket size baseball books have on their pages a look at baseballs earliest most sought after pictures and articles on organized baseball in its infancy. With hundreds of photos, statistics, and other related baseball items on over 350 pages, this little book gives an unbelievable look back at baseball at the turn of the century.
On 7 of the first 17 pages are full page photos of those who were in charge of both baseball leagues. There are 24 pages of photos and facts on the Boston "Braves" Nationals victory over the Philadelphia "Athletics" of the American League in the 1914 World Series. The great Jim Thorpe was a member on the Braves in 1914 and he's in the team photo plus another photo showing him swinging a bat. The first part of the book has team photos and action photos and related stories of every American and National League Team from the 1914 baseball season.
The next section shows all the minor league baseball teams from around the country, with a team photo and a paragraph on their 1914 minor league baseball season. On page 196 is a team photo of the Providence Minor League which played in the Baltimore International League. The Providence Team of 1914 were the Champions of the International League and the great Babe Ruth is pictured in the team photo. The Babe spent most of his childhood in the St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys where Brother Matthia's Boutlier taught him how to play baseball. In 1914, he signed with Providence and played briefly with them before he and several other teammates were sold to the Boston Red Sox, and the rest is History. Along with this book being very rare, finding a photo of Babe Ruth along with members of the Providence Baseball Team is a very exciting find. The photos of Babe Ruth and Jim Thorpe along with other great players make this one neat book.
