French Limoges Pate Sur Pate Madonna and Christ Child
French Porcelain pate sur pate of The Virgin Mary and Christ child. The plaque is signed by the artist Crelepot Limoges. The porcelain is in very good condition but does have a few spots in the glaze which I believe are firing artifacts where the glaze did not completely cover or possibly due to dirt or debris in the glaze at time of firing. This plaque is late 19th early 20th century. No chip cracks or restoration other than the glaze defects on the piece previously mentioned. The plaque is 6" round
Pate sur pate
French: "paste on paste", method of porcelain decoration in which a relief design is created on an unfired, unglazed body by applying successive layers of white slip (liquid clay) with a brush. The technique was first employed by the Chinese in the 18th century. It was introduced in Europe in about 1850 at Sevres, where it was perfected by Marc-Louis Solon, who later worked for Minton
