Stevengraph, Silk Picture, "Are you Ready"?, Victorian
I bought two of these very collectible Stevengraphs on my last trip to London. I must admit I was not familiar with these, though I have been to Conventry with a friend, and when I bought a woven bookmark, she told me Coventry was known for this sort of weaving. Anyway, after doing some research, I learned that Thomas Stevens started his silk weaving in 1869, though one source said the book marks were available in 1862. Thomas was credited with saving the silk weaving industry in Conventry. This piece, in its original frame, is titled "Are you Ready"? More research tells me this refers to a win by Oxford's boating team on March 15, 1883. This piece appears to be in the original frame, and is in excellent condition. Framed, the piece measures 9 inches East to West, and 6 and 1/2 inches North to South. On the mat, under the picture, are the words "Woven in silk by Thomas Stevens, Inventor and Manufacturer, Coventry and London (Registered)"
