Fernware Needle Case,Victorian, Robert Burns
This is one of the prettiest pieces of Fernware I have seen. The wood on these pieces always wears so well, one can not tell that is is circa 1870, until one sees the velvet of the spine, or the material on the inside. Ferns were actually used to make this very collectible type of Mauchline. This piece has a lovely likeness of Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland, on the front, It opens like a book, to reveal fittings for several sizes of needles. The sizes are marked , and there are two packets of needles inside. The packages are still in excellent condition, and they are the Abel Morrall's brand. I opened, very carefully, one of the packets, and it is full of needles. I should have photographed the inside of the packet, but did not think of it earlier, and do not want to open this paper packet again, because it is in excellent, and most likely unused, condition, as the little paper tab which closes the pack is still there. The original lining is still there on the inside, though it looks as though it may have been chewed by insects, or just worn, as it has some places where the fabric is missing. Closed, the case measures 5 inches long, and 2 inches wide. What a great find for collectors of Fernware, Burns, or sewing items.
