Illusion Print, Early Victorian
This is only the 2nd of the illusion prints I have ever seen. I had one once which was two sided, but this one has three views. I was amazed when I spied it hanging on a wall support in a little shop in Tetbury, England. It is circa 1840, and the pictures are those of two ladies and one man. The man reads, in French, "I am the husband." The next lady reads "I am the Wife." and the third "I am the diversion!" This piece is in excellent condition. There is no glass on it, and I wonder if there ever was. I don't see how it could have stayed in this good a shape with no glass. It would be a simple matter for a professional to put glass on it though, I'm sure. It is in it's original frame, which measures 16 inches North to South, ad 13 inches East to West. This is quite a rare find. I can't imagine how they folded the paper to create these three views.
