Antique Japanese Buddhist Wooden Mokugyo Temple Drum

This antique Japanese Buddhist temple drum is called a Mokugyo. It is a wooden percussion instrument used during chanting that has fish shaped handles. The drum is usually laid on its side on a cushion and struck with a leather wrapped mallet. It is circa 1860 from the Edo period (1800-1868). There are numerous condition problems and wear but it all adds to the "patina" and charm of this piece. The drum is worn on the sides where it was struck as well as on the bottom. The fish handles have some cracks and a few areas were the wood has been lost. The drum is about 10" deep, 13.5" tall and 13" wide. It is quite heavy and will require an oversize box. I will have parcel post as an option to reduce shipping costs. This would be a great piece to add to your Asian collection or to use in your Asian decor. It apparently has an internal crack so is not appropriate to put into use as a drum.
