This antique, French celestial pendant has a carved moonstone face perched on a crescent moon. This little "man on the moon" is artistically rendered. The superb carving is a character from the Commedia dell'arte. He sports a pointed cap that has a ruby accent. He wears a ruffled diamond collar.
It was formerly a brooch and was beautifully converted to a pendant. It has French guarantee stamps on the interior of the crescent and is silver topped 18 karat rose gold. The diamonds are set in silver, typical of the time period. There is a fine detailed perimeter gallery seen on one of the photos.
It measures : 37.3 mm without the bail x 32.8 mm across
The condition is very good/excellent with one diamond slightly darker than the others near the top of the cap. All stones are original.
This is a finely executed, rare motif. It is unique when worn on a chain or cord.
France, circa 1900 Simply wonderful!
