This French, 18 karat gold love pendant is circa 1920. It is an early version of the beloved Augis pendants.
They are referred to as medaille d'amour (medals of love.) In 1907, Alphonse Augis, a Lyon jeweler, was inspired by a poem written by the poet, Rosemond Gerard to her husband in 1889. The verse "plus qu'hier moins demain" translated to "I love you more than yesterday but less than tomorrow. " He created a jewel that was a rebus. The pendant had a plus (more) created with five tiny rose diamonds and a minus(less) with synthetic rubies. The perimeter has laurel leaves, flowers and four "X's." This is symbolic of allegiance and the triumph of love.

The early versions have letters that are thinner and the perimeter gold work is heavily carved. The reverse has the word Depose in the three o'clock poison rather than the usual 12 o'clock. These were not mass produced as the modern versions and variations add to their charm. The front is signed A. Augis.

It weighs 6.3 grams. The diameter is 7/8ths and the length with the bale is 1 3/8ths.
