This is a rare and unique book locket, English and rendered in 15 karat gold. Where do I start? The form of course is wonderful as is the hand engraving front back and sides. It opens, like a book to multiple sections. Most charming are the original Daguerreotypes of a husband and wife. They are easily removed by lifting the bezels and personal photos can replace them. The Daguerreotypes can then be preserved in a separate box if desired.
Daguerreotypes were developed in 1839, and have a distinct appearance. Because they are silver coated copper and reflective, you need to hold images at 45 degree angles to see them or you will see an image of yourself.
The back of the locket has an engraved arm holding a laurel leaf, symbolic of peace and protection.
It measures 1 inch without the top bail x 3/4 inches across. It weighs 12.9 grams.
It opens and closes securely and is in excellent condition. Some darkening on one interior panel corresponding to the cross, but no damages. It retains the original, rich yellow gold patina.
This is quite extraordinary to find in its original condition. Beautiful and a collector's dream.
England, circa 1850
