This antique, 19th century Mediterranean coral necklace has hand carved beads interspersed with gold Etruscan Revival beads. IT terminates with an original faceted coral clasp .
The beads are beautiful, small and hand faceted with the most beautiful, rich coral color. The beads range in size from approximately 4.3mm-5mm. The clasp is 8 mm.
Coral has many symbolic meanings and has been used historically as an amulet to protect against disease particularly in young children, as seen in many early portraits.
Today, the natural coral is prized because the coral reefs have almost been depleted and are considered endangered. Coral is no longer allowed to be harvested from these reefs.
The necklace measures 16 1/4 inches long. It looks elegant worn alone or as an accent with other chains. See photos attached.
It has been recently, meticulously restrung and is in excellent condition.
