25" Molded Cloth/ Linen Head "Enigma" Doll

c. 1850-1860’s Here is a seldom found doll referred to in Merrill’s – The Art of Dolls book as an Enigma doll. I’ve also seen them called Linen Head dolls. The shoulderhead is molded cloth and all of these dolls are wrapped with wire along the bottom edge to keep the shape. She has a covered wagon hairstyle and painted features. She is on a nicely made, firm cloth body with leather lower arms. One of the great things about her is her layers of well-made original clothing. Everything on this doll is hand sewn. She has a blue cotton print dress with piping around the neck, waist and sleeve openings. The sleeves are trimmed with blue fringe. The dress closes in back with 4 early hook & eye closures. The bodice of the dress is lined. There is a set in pocket on the right hand side of her skirt that holds a tiny kerchief. She also has simple cotton petticoat, drawers and a chemise...just a tiny row of lace on the bottom of the drawers. She also has cotton knit stockings blue multi thread and black leather shoes. In addition, she has a plaid jacket that is trimmed with the same fringe as her dress. The jacket is lined with muslin. There are some wear issues throughout the doll; however dolls of this type are hard to come by especially in this untouched condition. She has some paint missing from her face and hair which exposes the cloth underneath. Her nose is dinged and there is a bit of lifting along the seam across the top of her head and a dent on the top. Her leather arms have old mending stitches and she is missing her left index finger. The dress and jacket have wear, but the undergarments are pretty sturdy. The dress is a bit fragile as I believe some of the early dyes deteriorate fabric. There are some tears around the shoulders, front of the skirt and around the hem. The back near the closures is a bit frail as well. The jacket fabric is worn mostly across the shoulders. I tend to think these dolls are American since there was a good bit of experimentation during this time frame in America with dolls or rubber, rawhide, etc. This doll is from my own collection and she is looking for someone else who appreciates that she is a rare and original survivor. I have additional pictures that would not fit in the listing. Free Priority Shipping / US Shipping Only.
