Rowland & Marsellus Blue-Transfer "American Poets" Plate

Though the back stamp seems to suggest otherwise, Rowland and Marsellus were not Staffordshire potters but American importers who commissioned various English companies to supply them the transfer-printed commodity. Various souvenir items were imported from 1890 through the 1930's. This plate commemorates American Poets - Longfellow, Holmes, Lowell, Whittier, Poe, Emerson and Bryant, each pictured within a round portrait among a background of roses and a banner "American Poets" across the top of the plate. The plate measures 10" across and has no cracks, chips, nicks or repairs; it is crazed and the back has some staining, which bleeds unto the front ever so slightly. The back contains an impressive backstamp for the R & M Company. A nice historical piece of Americana from the early twentieth century.
