Though the back stamp seems to suggest otherwise, Rowland and Marsellus were not Staffordshire potters but American importers who commissioned various English companies to supply them the transfer-printed commodity. Various souvenir items were imported from 1890 through the 1930's.
This plate commemorates American Poets - Longfellow, Holmes, Lowell, Whittier, Poe, Emerson and Bryant, each pictured within a round portrait among a background of roses and a banner "American Poets" across the top of the plate. The plate measures 10" across and has no cracks, chips, nicks or repairs; it is crazed and the back has some staining, which bleeds unto the front ever so slightly. The back contains an impressive backstamp for the R & M Company. A nice historical piece of Americana from the early twentieth century.
