Victorian Majolica Plate w/Lattice, Fern & Floral Motif

Victorian Majolica was produced from 1851 to around 1900, starting in Europe and then moving to America. Majolica is a lead or tin glazed earthenware which is first fired to the biscuit stage. Then it is decorated with brightly colored metallic glazes and fired again. This gives the piece the brilliance which is characteristic of majolica.

This lovely and colorful plate, circa 1880, has a central design of several varieties of fern fronds in shades of green, brown with tinges of pink and three pink and yellow blossoms. The background is a basket-weave design in white. The border is a lattice-work design in soft yellow. The reverse is a spatter design of variegated brown.

The plate measures 9 1/4" across and is unmarked as to maker. The condition is very good with no cracks, chips or repairs; one small 1/4" glaze flake on the edge and some minor age related scuffs which is common with old majolica pieces. Beautiful soft colors and great design.
