Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S (U.S.) Grant - 1st Edition, 2 Volume Set
Contains numerous maps, engravings, gate-fold facsimile of the original "Terms of Lee's Surrender" as written by General Grant, as well as the printed inscription by Grant that "These volumes are dedicated to the American Soldier and Sailor, New York City, May 23 1885". The facsimile of Lee's surrender opposite page 496 of volume #2 has several tears, which is not uncommon as the paper was extremely fragile. The overall condition of the set is very good; some minor scuffs and wear on the cloth covering, first two end pages in volume #2 have the lower corners missing, address label of a prior owner on first end page of each volume.
Grant dies just days after the manuscript was turned over to the publisher and never lived to see the work in book form, let alone inscribe any copies of it.
Wonderful, rare set for the first edition collector, student of U.S.Grant or historical buff.
