A beautiful and touching tribute to the death of a young child. This lovely 14kt - 18kt gold (not tested) Georgian mourning or memorial ring has all the elements of a rare collectors piece. The oval ivory disc with sepia painting of an urn positioned on a plinth and sheltered by an over-hanging weeping willow was originally surrounded by 28 small garnets, 3 of which are now missing. The color of the garnets vary, but I feel they are all original. The ivory is covered with a thin piece of glass and the oval, including garnets, measures about 5/8" across and 3/4" in length. The ring band, size 7 1/4, with white enamel background is engraved "Eliz Martin OB 28 1776 AE 11". White enamel was used if the deceased had never been married and black if the person had been married. The ring is in very good condition for being 234 years old, with the exception of three missing garnets and some loss of enamel on the band.
You see mourning jewelry for older family members, but rarely for an eleven year old child and dated as early as this ring. A treasure for the serious collector.
