Stepping Stones in the Forest....this piece is part of my Calculi collection, which sketches paths of gemstone pebbles. In particular, this necklace captures the verdant colours of the forest with their warm palette. Like stepping stones across a forest floor, sets of smooth peridot pebbles progress toward to the centrepiece, a 5 carat smooth lozenge of natural spessartine (nee spessartite garnet). The peridot (15 carats total weight) is bright and clear, with wonderful transparency not often seen in a stone known for its inclusions, especially in bead form, and its natural colour is not quite lime and not quite grass, but somewhere beautifully in between. The garnet is a wonder - a natural burnt tangerine, it, too, is essentially transparent and has a single internal fault line down its near centre. With the horizontal axis of the drill line and the vertical axis of the fault, it seems that the stone has a cross fixed within it...
The stones are wired together on 14/20 gold-filled wire and transition into a slender chain of gold-filled links. The necklace is 17.25" in length, finishes with a lobster clasp, and ships in a gift box.
