Scintillans - Fine Silver and Red Sapphire Earrings

Sparkling - These earrings are part of my new collection, which I have entitled "Scintillans" because each piece sparkles with movement. After forging and hand-cutting discs of substantial fine silver, I flush set red sapphires in the lower quadrant of each disc. The sapphires weigh a total of .6 carats (so, .3 carats apiece), and have an intense crimson glow to them. The quadrants are delineated by boundaries graven into the silver, and the sparkling sgraffito texture I did by hand....time-consuming and sometimes painful on the fingers, but beautiful in the end. The end result is a pair of earrings which look like glyphs - contemporary somehow, almost futuristic, but equally at home as symbols from a lost time.

I shaped the earwires from sterling silver for strength, and the discs, which are 15mm in diameter, fall 5/8ths of an inch from those wires. This gorgeous pair of sapphire and fine silver earrings ships in a gift box.
