Ao Kutani Bowl, Large Centerpiece, Antique Japanese, Green, Meiji Era

This fabulous and rare large porcelain bowl will be the focal point of any room! It is about 13-1/2" in diameter and 5-1/4" high. The Ao Kutani colors are green, aubergine, yellow, and brown, with outlining in black. It is a 19th C piece, and is signed on the base with the fuku mark.

The interior is painted with a family gathering in a garden. There are seven people and a baby. The patriarch is reading a scroll (poetry?) held by a young boy. The exterior is painted with flowers.

This rare green kutani bowl was purchased as antique in Japan during the U.S. Occupation, according to family history from the son managing the estate.

Condition? There is a very old staple (or rivet) repair to the bowl. There is a hairline crack descending from the lip of the bowl. Both can be seen in the close-up photos. Despite these, the bowl still rings when tapped. There is the added bonus of the painter's fingerprint on the brown border at the base of the bowl! 7/11 on sale

The bowl weighs about 5-1/2 pounds.
