This beautifully decorated Etruscan shape English bone china cup and saucer set was made by H. & R. Daniel about 1824. The gilding is unworn and is set off well by the mazarine blue background.
For a photograph of an almost identical Etruscan cup and saucer, please see plate 8 of Michael Berthoud's book, "H. & R. Daniel". The shape is exactly the same, and all of the design elements are the same. This pattern has more handpainted flowers than the one pictured.
This pattern is 3859 and exactly matches the Etruscan teapot shown by color plate A(i) in that book. This cup measures 1-7/8" high, which also matches the cup mentioned above.
Neither cup nor saucer has a maker's mark, a pattern number, or a tally mark. The cup is in fair condition. There are 2 hairline cracks in the body of the cup, visible best from the outside. The saucer is in very good condition. It has no cracks, or chips, and rings when tapped. There is some wear to the gilding, especially of the cartouches surrounding the flowers. The set displays very well.
