This extraordinary Kutani Porcelain Vase was decorated in the Satsuma style. There is much gilding. The beautifully painted Samurai are each a portrait. The horses are decorated with rich trappings. The back of the vase is painted more in the Kutani mode, with Bijin and Scholars in a garden. Under each reticulated handle is a separate vignette of 3 women. I date it c.1880.
The vase is 12" high. The diameter of the mouth is 4-7/8". The kanji on the base says "Kutani" and "Watano Sei".
The vase is in excellent condition. There are no chips, no cracks, and no repairs. On the mouth of the vase is a streak of red enamel which was done "in the making".
