Dramatic Victorian "Lover's Eye" Brooch-Water Color on Ivory

A favorite treasure of most collectors of antique jewelry is the "lovers eye." The story of their origination is well told with bits and pieces of exaggeration or interpretation. However no one could doubt the splendid artistry that was exhibited in the creation of these wonderful examples.

Here we see one of the most unusual depictions we have ever seen. The scale of the eye itself is larger than most. Unusual, as well, is the brown eye and shadow on the eyelid. The painting is done in watercolor on ivory. The brooch is encircled with 34 glowing pearls. All appear to be original with only one showing slight discoloration.

The gold has been carefully acid tested and shows a strong 9K measurement. The "T" pin and "C" clasp are original. In addition a small ring has been added on one end. Normally a chain and safety pin were added to the ring for security purposes. It was probably removed a long time ago.

Overall, the brooch measures 1 7/8 of an inch side-to-side and 1-inch top to bottom. The long extended pin is typical of antique brooches.

Outstanding antique condition.
