Tibetan OM Prayer Bead and Conch Shell Earrings
These were created using Tibetan beads. The top beads are made from a Nepalese family by hand. They are brass beads which are then burnt and then etched with the symbol of OM Mani Mantra. It is a painstaking process and takes many hours to complete these beads.
OM is the most common mantra in Tibet. Tibetan people almost all Buddhists do believe that is is very good to practice the mantra of Chenrezi, which may relieve negative karma, accumulate merit, help rescue them from the sea of suffering and achieve Buddhahood. Speaking the mantra loud or silently, spinning prayer wheels with the mantra and carving mantra into stones are the usual practice.
The bottom bead is a Conch Shell set in brass. The Conch symbolized the word of power. According to sutra, When Sakyamuni deliver the sermon, his voice is loud and clear, just like the Precious white Conch horn's voice. So nowadays,it always plays the Precious white Conch horn in the buddhism ceremony. In tibet, the dextral Precious white Conch horn is regarded as the best ,it symbolize enjoying a good reputation, and it is also a symbol of Sakyamuni's never weakened voice.
Some of these beads have traveled many continents and had numerous owners. Small chips, corrosion, and pitting are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. It is interesting to imagine how they have survived a hundred or more years of wear and travel. Just imagine who wore them in the past and the mystery associated with them.
