Early 1900's Hand-Painted Color Lithograph Photo on Glass - English Magic Lantern Slide – Scene From The Secret Garden - Popular English Childrens Novel - Frances Hodgson Burnett, Author - Captioned "A Little Helpmate"
This image on this slide is that of the main character, a young Victorian orphan girl named Mary Lennox, sitting in a kitchen learning to peel potatoes with her uncle's housekeeper, Mrs. Medlock, standing over her. The story centers around her and her invalid cousin's discovery of a "secret garden" hidden away and kept locked by her reclusive uncle since his wife's death.
Before moving pictures, magic lanterns were used to project on a large screen a series of still images of travel sights, historical events or popular stories - often shown in sequence with the reading of an accompanying text.
Hand-painted glass lithograph in a metal frame. Measures 3-1/4" x 3-1/4".
