Charlie McCarthy wind-up walker tin lithograph toy made by Louis Marx & Co., c1940. Charlie is the mischievous child-star ventriloquist dummy, featured by ventriloquist Edgar Bergen in his radio act from 1936 to 1955, and later in 1950's TV appearances. Edgar Bergen's real child was Candace Bergen (famous her long-running "Murphy Brown" TV series), who as as a young girl thought Charley was her brother!
8-1/2" high walker; wind-up mechanism works very well. Charley's mouth opens and closes as he shuffles side-to-side. Logo for Louis Marx & Co., of New York is on his back. Rubbing on the raised edges and back in some areas has exposed the white primer coat. In some spots the metal has been exposed. Some surface rust on the underside of the base only. HOWEVER, these photos greatly exaggerate the brightness of the exposed white primer, which is much less distracting in person.
Nonetheless, in pretty fair shape for a 70-yr old child dummy. Could be reconditioned so it looks like new, and we can recommend an expert if one is desired.
