"Whirling Aeroplane Race" vintage airplane game, "Mac" No. 60 and still in its original box - one of the line of "Mac" toys and games manufactured by the McDowell Mfg. Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1920s and 1930s. Any McDowell game is relatively rare, and when found, they are almost never both in such fine condition as this one AND in the original box. This one is truly a rare find!
The Whirling Aeroplane Race game is one of the niftiest games of the "Mac" line. It features three particularly fine heavy metal biplane airplanes (with spinning propellers) as stationary game pieces, set on a round tin game board, which is spun around by the center post. The rules of play are printed around the edge of the game board. The winner is the first to acquire 100 points. It is believed to date to the late 1920's or early 1930s.
The McDowell Manufacturing Co. was a small toy and game manufacturer who was only in business for a limited amount of time. Very little is known about it, and we have yet to find a complete catalog of their toys and games.
This was acquired in 2002 from the estate of Herbert Underhill of Bellows Falls, Vermont – an early New England aviator who was the earliest license pilot in Vermont in the 1920's. This game mostly given to, or acquired by Mr. Underhill, because of his achievements as an aeronautical pioneer in Vermont.
Game box is 10-1/2" long x 10" wide x 1-1/2 high. The game itself measures 9-3/4" in diameter.
PHOTO NOTE: Photos often distort the clarity of the image and the intensity of the colors. The muted "grainy" look is exaggerated. The colors are actually vivid and the clarity much greater when viewed in person. Minor soiling, small blemishes and slight defects are exaggerated by the photo process, and are usually much less noticeable when viewed in person. Photos of objects under glass often show color distortions and reflections from the flash.
CONDITION NOTE: The game is in excellent, almost new condition, with no rust, and very few scratches or other flaws. The lithography is brightly colored and un-faded. The game board and the airplanes are both in working condition and undamaged. The box top has very small puncture tears on the front, and the four corners have separated or torn (but could be repaired). Otherwise it is clean and in very good condition. The lithograph images are not damaged. The box itself is in very good condition with a crumpled corner but no tears.
