Iroquois Native American Indian hand-woven vintage knitting yarn basket -- 9" high x 7" diameter - with tightly fitted cover and two delicately woven carrying handles. Simple but very elegant design.
We are not experts in basket weaving, but this appears to have four or more different kinds of material woven into this piece. Bottom appear to be interwoven reed. A hemp-like material is woven in two rings top and bottom, with the center in both reeds and hemp-like material interwoven in a checkered pattern. The braided handles are a very flexible hemp-like material. Cover top is has bands of hemp-like material and yellow reeds with a star pattern around the opening. Basket rim is covered with red reeds as is the inside of the basket. And the inside cover has an especially beautiful pattern woven with rings of brown, red reeds and a yellow straw-like material.
Top and sides all in great condition. Small hole in the bottom is not visible, and neither affects its structural integrity or interferes with its intended use. Small break in one of six strands of one handle.
Great very decorative vintage Native American item.
