Authentic late 19th Century China Trade large lacquered chest set on a 9-3/4" stand features the typical design elements of Shanxi Province chests - the opening top, the strap metal lock fitting, and the square painted panel on the front with floral bands. Made of elmwood - also typical of Shanxi Province - this large chest is very solid but nonetheless incredibly light weight - perhaps as little as 30 pounds!
The lacquered finish, painted Chinese figures and floral decorations show great age, a wonderful muted color and an exceptionally nice patina. (PHOTO NOTE: The colors of the painted figures appear somewhat brighter in the photos than they actually are). The Chinese characters on the inside of the top are dealer marks acquired somewhere between Shanxi Province and upstate New York where we found it at an estate sale near Albany.
